Responsible for the overall strategic direction of the firm, Paul founded Athena Law in 2013 to deliver no-nonsense, specialist corporate and commercial legal services to support and protect businesses across the North West.

Stephen heads up our commercial litigation team and has extensive experience in pursuing and defending proceedings through the courts, including the High Court and Court of Appeal. Stephen ensures that his clients’ interests are robustly protected, with minimum disruption to their businesses.


Business to business disputes, builder and trade disputes, commercial property litigation, contract disputes, debt recovery, landlord and tenant disputes, possession claims, timeshare and holiday club claims involving complex Group Actions and professional negligence claims.

Raymond advises on all aspects of property and business law.


Commercial property sales and purchases, commercial leases, asset sales and acquisitions, advising on bank security and preparing commercial reports on title, and land option and rights of pre-emption. He also provides advice on franchise, distributorship, consultancy, partnership, and service agreements. With a Masters in employment law, Raymond also counsels on employment issues arising from the sale or acquisition of businesses. And, as a Notary Public assists clients with the administration and legal requirements of dealing with foreign property and assets.



Graham is a commercial litigator and insolvency specialist. Having spent eight years working in Hong Kong he has considerable experience in cross border actions and enforcement globally. He acts for insolvency practitioners and directors in distressed situations, on both contentious and non-contentious matters. He also acts on general commercial litigation, such as breach of warranty claims, professional negligence actions, as well as cases against banks and financial institutions for the mis selling of products such as SWAPS and interest rate hedging products. Graham provides practical, pragmatic and commercial solutions to contentious issues.

Graham has been recognised as a leading individual in his field in Chambers Asia, International Finance Law Review 1000 and Legal 500, in which he was described as “a highly regarded insolvency expert, praised as technically strong with good commercial sense”.  He was also Co-author of The Definitive Guide Distressed Debt and Turnaround Investing published by PEI (the section on PRC law).



Guy is a consultant at Athena Law. A corporate lawyer admitted in England and Hong Kong, he is currently based in Hong Kong. Guy trained in a tier one global law firm, and has twice held in-house positions in industry (leading aerospace and automotive engineering groups). He also worked in the first mainland Chinese law firm in London. Guy mainly advises European investors on deals in Asia and some investors from Asia on deals in the UK / Europe. Guy is fluent in English, French and Italian; and speaks good Mandarin.

Key areas of expertise include Corporate litigation, especially shareholder disputes, in particular minority shareholder protection claims and court ordered share valuation and buy outs; misfeasance and recovery action against directors and directors’ disqualification proceedings; breach of trust/fiduciary duty claims and professional negligence.

Martyn Caplan


Martyn has over 33 years’ experience as a commercial litigation solicitor and has been a partner in three commercial law firms including Pannone.

His experience includes being involved in six reported leading cases in the Court of Appeal, he has been a CEDR qualified mediator since 2007, and has been the author of many published articles.

During the period 2014 – 2109 he was one of the founders, and creators of the pioneering law firm Lawyers Inc., an ABS business model designed to enable law firms, teams of lawyers and individual lawyers to become part of Lawyers Inc. and share gross fees.

Tracy commenced her legal career working at one of the Country’s largest legal practices in Yorkshire dealing in debt recovery matters.   

In 1998 she re-located to over the Pennines to Manchester and joined a firm of Solicitors where she was head of debt recovery, a department that she was responsible for creating and building through the acquisition of new debt recovery Clients.  

Tracy is a senior litigation executive and manager of Athena Debt Recovery which is part of the firm’s commercial litigation department supervised by our head of commercial litigation partner Stephen Boyd.

Charmaine Moran


Charmaine is a solicitor in our commercial litigation team. She has strong academics having completed her LLB at Liverpool Hope University and going on to complete a Master of Laws. Charmaine has been with the firm since 2018 firstly as a paralegal before being admitted as a Solicitor. 

She specialises in Commercial Litigation and has particular experience in dealing with high value contentious commercial cases, insolvency and recovery work and complex group claims against UK Financial Institutions connected with mis-selling of timeshares. She prides herself in thoroughly preparing and advocating her clients cases so that the chances of success are maximised.

Jonathan is a consultant partner specialising in real estate finance. He has extensive experience of investment and development real estate finance deals across a wide range of sectors. Prior to joining Athena Law in 2021 Jonathan grew and developed a property finance team at another Manchester city centre firm into a leading player, acting for high street banks, challenger banks, bridging finance and development funders.

Jonathan takes pride in the quality and speed of delivery of advice and, importantly, commercial awareness highlighting problems as early as possible in every transaction. Jonathan provides creative, practical and commercial solutions to get transactions finalised within the time frames required.

Jonathan specialises in the following areas:

  • acquisition and investment finance;
  • refinance;
  • development and construction finance;
  • preparation of certificates/reports on title;
  • intercreditor arrangements; and
  • perfection of security.
